What Is a Gunite Pool, and Why We Build Them

If you are planning a pool, you have probably run into the word gunite. Here is what it means, and why it is the kind of pool we build.

What is a gunite pool?

Gunite starts as concrete. To build the pool, our crew shapes a steel frame in the ground in the outline of the pool, then sprays a mix of concrete and sand over that frame to form the shell. It hardens right in place. That is the key difference from other pools. A gunite pool is built in your yard, not delivered to it. Because the shell is formed on site, the shape and the size follow your yard and your plan. The finished shell is strong and made to last.

A pool that fits your yard

This is the main reason homeowners choose gunite. Since the shell is shaped on site, the pool can follow a slope, tuck into a tight corner, or match a shape you have pictured. A fiberglass pool arrives as one finished shell in a set list of shapes and sizes, so the yard has to work around the pool. Gunite works the other way. The pool is drawn around the space you already have.

It also leaves room for built-in features. On the pools we build, that can mean a tanning ledge, a beach entry, sitting walls, custom steps, or an infinity edge, along with water features, an outdoor shower, and lighting. Those details are simple to plan into a pool that is formed in place.

In Sudbury, we built the backyard we call Sudbury Retreat, which includes a custom 16 by 24 gunite pool. Landscape architect Elizabeth Gourley designed the space, and J&E built it. Near the pool sit an outdoor shower and a pool house, a custom outdoor kitchen with a bar, and a bluestone dining terrace framed by a seating wall and a fire pit. A sports court for pickleball and basketball sits close by.
